Dear Franklin Country Board of Elections,
It was so nice of you to finally send me my ballot, but here’s the thing. I’m not in Columbus anymore.
I’m in Israel.
In other words, you kind of suck.
Love, Maddie.
This was a minor setback in my mind. I was determined to vote. Ohio’s a swing state, after all. Jason cast his ballot with the knowledge that New York would go Democrat no matter what, but me, in little “unexciting” (screw you guys.) Ohio, my vote would count.
And it was going to be counted no matter what I had to do.
What I ended up having to do was to wake up on November 4 at 8 a.m.and trek to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv. Well, first I had to pay for a bus to Bat Yam to pick up my Youth Vote Overseas papers from my madrich.
Then I had to pay again to take a bus to the Tel Aviv central bus station. The bus took me to the wrong station.
From there I had to take a cab to the Embassy, which was on Hayarkon Street. Hayarkon is the last street before the Tel Aviv beach. I walked up and down looking for the embassy: there were no flags flying, there was no grand sign or indication of the building. Finally I noticed a long line coming out of a plain gray building and I noticed the Seal of the United States of America on the side of the building.
I paid again to have my purse and water bottle put in storage while I went in to meet two friends who were already filling out their absentee ballots. I got there ten minutes before the absentee polls closed.
Ohio went Democrat. This is the first time in eight years that I’ve felt pride for my country, belief in our government, and faith in the American people. Good job, everyone.
And you’re welcome, Ohio.
